2.0 Suggested Install Method On Ubuntu 13.04?

2.0 Suggested Install Method On Ubuntu 13.04 ?

Hi,

My and my team have finished our 1st SDL 2.0 video game!

We have only built the source code on Windows®.
We are interested in supporting Linux (*ubuntu in particular)

What is the best suggested method to install the following on *ubuntu?

  • SDL2
  • SDL2_Image
  • SDL2_Mixer
  • SDL2_TTF

We have seen some PPA’s on the Internet but am unsure if that is best way?
Thanks…------------------------

Download source code, and then
’./configure; make; make install’On Aug 31, 2013, at 7:31 PM, “JeZ-l-Lee” wrote:

Install from source. That’s the best way if it’s not in the official repos. On Sun, Sep 1, 2013 at 1:31 AM, JeZ-l-Lee <JessePalserMailingLists at gmail.com wrote:

Installing from source really isn’t that difficult if you read the
documentation carefully. One thing that’s left out of the SDL2 install doc
though is that you must build in a different directory than the source and
then run ./configure from that directory. On Sat, Aug 31, 2013 at 11:56 AM, PHilip RUshik (??) wrote:

I build in-tree all the time, works fine, even straight from git. If you
are only doing testing and not trying to find a good method to distribute
on Ubuntu yet, then all you have to do it ./configure && make && make
install. Of course that is just for SDL2, I don’t know about the other
libraries. I know SDL2_ttf requires freetype2 and SDL2_image probably needs
things like libpng (which is needed by freetype too), those things should
be installed from the repos, something like “sudo apt-get install
libpng-dev libjpeg-dev libfreetype2-dev” (don’t copy and paste, its not
exact, just an example). On Sun, Sep 1, 2013 at 2:05 AM, Alberto Corona wrote:

Just use apt-get build-dep sdl-image1.2 or sdl-mixer1.2, and I think it’s
sdl-ttf2.0. That pulls are dependencies to build them for youOn Sat, Aug 31, 2013 at 12:29 PM, PHilip RUshik (??) wrote:

That’s only when building from Mercurial. If you get a snapshot you
don’t have to do that, it’s just ./configure ; make ; sudo make
install as usual.

I just checked. Did an hg pull followed by hg update followed by
./configure --prefix=/usr && make followed by sudo make install and it all
worked perfectly.

Maybe its not supposed to work and something is broken, but it builds
in-tree for me.On Sun, Sep 1, 2013 at 4:24 AM, Sik the hedgehog <sik.the.hedgehog at gmail.com wrote:

Looking towards the future, Ubuntu 13.10 (not released yet) has
various SDL2 packages.

libsdl2-2.0-0
libsdl2-image-2.0-0
|libsdl2-mixer-2.0-0
libsdl2-net-2.0-0

libsdl2-dev
libsdl2-image-dev
libsd2-mixer-dev
libsdl2-net-dev

I imagine ubuntu 13.10 will be released in October. On Sat, Aug 31, 2013 at 12:45 PM, PHilip RUshik (??) wrote:
