A fairly large SDL project

We just released Exult 0.26, an Ultima7 game engine using SDL that
provides a fairly large example of 2D and palette animations that can be
done. Source and Win32 binaries are at exult.sourceforge.net.

I’d just like to say Exult kicks ass. I’d volunteer time if I had any.

Actually, I’m surprised that Linux Game Distributors like Tux Games haven’t
tried to start building and selling Linux versions of games like Warcraft II
and Ultima 7 by using the free GPLed engines, then paying Blizzard/Origin for
the rights to put the data files onto the CD.

How did I guess that you’d like this sort of thing, Mike? (I’m still waiting
for a free Linux engine for Master of Magic!)

Not a bad idea. I’ve thought of contacting Origin; but they don’t even
exist as a separate entity anymore, being completely absorbed by EA.
I’m also a little worried that their reaction might be to threaten to
sue me. Of course, I wouldn’t mind if they’d throw some money our way

Definitely not that – their sources aren’t GPLed, and they work from the
original files instead of making it up as they go along. (In most cases)

I’m saying, what if we took FreeCraft or AleClone or whatever it is, paired
it up with the data files from Warcraft II with permission of the vendor
(Blizzard) and hocked that.

They will never let you do such a thing because they thing that you
are an enemy, someone that are going to take them users.

(Doing such a thing you are going to take them out a lot of clients)

When people get power they start to see enemy in every place.

But anyway , try iy.

Would the free engines be capable of phrasing the Warcraft II, etc. data files? On Wed, 10 May 2000, you wrote:

phrasing? if you mean parsing, then yes, that’s what they do. they’re made
specifically for the original data files.

speaking of this topic, who maintains the SDL version of Hexen? There’s some bugs
I need to report on it…

Do you mean ‘parsing’? If so, the answer is ‘yes’, at least for Exult.
In fact, most of Ultima7’s plot is scripted in a file called ‘usecode’,
which is a binary byte-code file similar to Java. So Exult doesn’t just
parse it, but interprets it with its own virtual machine.> On Wed, 10 May 2000, you wrote:

Thanks! I’d volunteer to work at Loki (seriously!) if it didn’t involve
moving back to S. California.
