All Video SDL Apps freeze

I’ve just installed SDL 1.2.2 from source. Apart from ./configure noting that
there was no OpenGL support on my system, everything seemed to go perfectly
and the SDL libraries were built and installed on my system. The test
programs in the test sub-directory were also built without problems.

However, none of the programs in the test directory will work if they access
the display. Instead, they hang. There are no error messages - the programs
just freeze. The audio test program, however, works fine.

I don’t think the lack of OpenGL support can be the cause of this because the
test programs don’t use OpenGL.

I tried writing and compiling my own program :

#include <SDL/SDL.h>

int main()
{

    SDL_Surface *screen;

    if (SDL_Init(SDL_INIT_VIDEO) != 0)
    {
            printf("Unable to initialise SDL : %s\n", SDL_GetError() );
            return 1;
    }

    atexit(SDL_Quit);

    screen = SDL_SetVideoMode(640,480,16,SDL_FULLSCREEN);

    if (screen==NULL)
    {
            printf("Unable to set video mode : %s\n", SDL_GetError() );
            return 1;

    }

    printf("Success\n");

    return 0;

}

This compiles successfully, but also freezes when run. There are no error
messages. If I change the SDL_INIT_VIDEO to SDL_INIT_AUDIO, the program runs
correctly.

I’m using SuSE Linux 7.0 on a Pentium II system. XFree86 3.3.6. Matrox G200
video card. KDE 2.1.1

Anyone got any ideas as to what’s wrong?
