An Old Question Rears its ugly head again -- SDL_mixer Delay when playing WAV files

I am trying to play a wav file with SDL_mixer,and it works great except
that there is a long delay between the call to Mix_PlayChannel and the
actual playing of the sound. The delay is at least a second long, and
very, very annoying. This happens both in my code and in Roger
Ostrander’s mixer tutorial code.

This happens on two different machines, 800/900 mhz Both Running RH 9.0
with KDE. One has a Creative Awe64 soundcard (ISA) and the Other a ESS
Maestro (pci). SDL_mixer is 1.2.5-1 RPM reports that SDL is 1.2.5-3,
oddly enough.

Looking through the SDL mailing list archives I noticed a small thread
in February 2003 describing my problem. I’m a little frustrated with
this, and I was just wondering if anyone had figured this out.
Any help/information would be greatly appreciated.–

I have similar problems, delays when wave files play, if the wave files
play at all.

I was going to make a simple test case and send it to Sam over the
weekend, but if happens in that simple tutorial, we can hope it will be
solved soon. I was about to switch to OpenAL :\
