Beginner

Hello. Is there anyone on the list that would mind if I asked them some
very basic questions? (So I can keep them off list).

Ta. Ant.

Sorry, I’m also a beginner, I’m sure I wouldn’t have answers to any
questions, no matter how basic.
At least not yet…

I’ve been using SDL for a few months now, I think I can answer some of
your very basic questions, just email me at aaron at Nayzak.com–

Why not just ask them on the list? There are always other beginners that
would benefit from the answers. And what may be basic for you might be
complex for another.

Ask whatever you want, as long as it relates to SDL.

O.K. Thanks…

The most basic question is, how do I compile? I use the -l option
a lot, but I dont know what to put in there for SDL.

Number two. I’m trying to install the demo files. Easy? I edited the
GNUmake file to point to where SDL is (/usr/include/SDL/ {according to
the whereis command}). But when I run make it returns an error of not
found.

I think that should do for now. The actual API looks good, if I can
start using it…

Try using SDL 0.11.2 - it is fully autoconf’d like any other normal library.

Oh no, not at all. SDL is still a fairly young project, by many
standards, and there’s no real hard and fast rule as to what constitutes
a “basic question.” As long as it’s not covered in the SDL FAQ or in
any of the documentation that came with SDL, I suppose it should be fair
game. Just follow the rules for Usenet: don’t ask any questions that
might be better answered by looking at the docs. And there ain’t a
terrible amount of that!–
