CVS update (thread-safe error messages)

The latest CVS snapshot has the thread support moved into a platform
independent layer, allowing thread-safe error messages. I also removed
vsnprintf(), and added the infrastructure needed for internationalized
error messages.

Does anyone have the need for internationalized error messages?

This seems inevitable. However, it might be interesting to ref the recurring
kernel discussion of internationalized error messages for a little rundown of
the problems. Luckily, SDL is pretty small compared to the kernel, and we’re
really talking about support for other people writing error messages, not SDL
itself.
