Duh, I didn’t know SDL would work with DJGPP! AFAIK, there never was a
DOS port. SDL can only run under Linux, BeOS, and Windoze.

DJGPP exists for other areas as well. A DOS port wouldn’t be too terribly
hard,

The biggest problems I can see, the ones which have prevented me from
trying, are the threading and the configure script.

There are some threading libraries for DJGPP, it might be possible to
use these.

and could be quite cool, except that it’d have no point whatsoever.

A future application base for Freedos and DR-DOS?

Still, that’s enough reason.

Threading would be quite difficult, yes, but I’m pretty sure that there are
libraries to do it. (Allegro?) The configure script would be easy; just
ditch it or use the nearest fit. I think there may even be a version of
configure for DOS… I’m sure that problem must have been dealt with with
the Windows version.

Threading is the biggest stumbling block. There are threading
libraries for DJGPP but none of them seem to be in a mature enough state
to use for a DOS port to SDL. People developing them seem to have lost
interest. I’ve tried using a few earlier this year. And contrary to an
assertion in another posting, Allegro does not have any threading
support. As far as graphics are concerned, it would be far easier to
just wrap around an existing one such as GRX (which, oddly enough, seems
to have more functionality than SDL as far as graphics primitives are
concerned) or Allegro. Since we now live in the DOS world, performance
hit will probably be far smaller than under more sophisticated OS’s.
