The basic problem was you were creating an 8-bit hardware surface
and blitting it to a packed pixel software surface. It played hell
with my surface code.
I was? Gee.
While it still doesn’t make any sense to do, at least now it works.
Someone once said “provide mechanism, not policy”. Fine words. :^)
