Foundation for SDL? was Re: Development status of SDL

hi,

What do you think of an SDL foundation? Administered by the Software
Freedom Conservancy[1], or a similar group which handles all the admin.
This could then get grants, and other funding to help with development
efforts.

It could be made from a few different open source media software groups
too. I’d like the pygame group to be part of this foundation if it is going
to happen, since pygame is tied to SDL, and the pygame project might also
want to join some sort of foundation at some point.

I’d also like to suggest to the portmedia project be included (which do the
portaudio and portmidi projects).

The benefits of a foundation would be to have a place where admin can happen
without taking up too much resources of the contibutors. It will also ease
donations(for tax purposes), grants, and development contracts. As well the
project could gain sponsorship, and have that handled. Additionally the
foundation can hold and manage the copyright. Foundations in some
communities arrange development sprints to happen, and pay for developers to
go. They can also pay developers to work on things. They also run
conferences, and other things. As well as help pay for infrastructure
(servers etc).

Anyway… just thought I’d ask Sam, Ryan and the rest of the SDL community
what they thought of this?

I think this could kick the projects into gear a bit. Maybe since Sam does
not want to do SDL under his company anymore, then running it under a
foundation might be better. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a
while for the pygame project. I’m also involved a little with the portmidi
project(through the python bindings) and use portaudio library and think
they could join forces with SDL nicely in this. But I haven’t talked to the
port* people at all about it.

Interested in what you think?

cheers,

project that use them include: git, jQuery, pypy, samba, sugar labs (olpc),
etc.

I think that’s a good option to consider. SDL is all over the place,
especially on new open platforms. It would certainly gain from promotion
and other features of foundation support.

Hi all

I also second the idea. Forming a legal entity always has lot of advantages.

Ability to receive corporate tax deductible donations and legal standing to enter into contracts attracts me the most.

Since I’m from a FreeBSD background, I would like to mention the FreeBSD Foundation: http://www.freebsdfoundation.org/

The Mozilla Foundation is also worth mention: http://www.mozilla.org/foundation/

Since the many users of the SDL are corporate or future corporate type (at least small entrepreneurs), a foundation may be able to fund at least a small team of full time developers.

Whether it’s a foundation or not, I can contribute some ideas on revenue generation:

  1. Core developers can write a book on SDL. Get an internationally renowned publisher like O’Reilly to publish. (The secret of success of a book is a quality product behind, think of this idea after the SDL 2.0 is released)

  2. Open the libsdl.org web site for advertisements.

Secret of success of SDL is it’s commercial friendly license. Thanks for Sam for open it up. Now all developers be very creative on making revenue out of what you sweat.

Best regards

Yeah, there are lots of ways to raise revenue for a foundation. Which can
be used for development activities, and for doing admin type stuff so
developer time can be freed up to hack on code.

cheers,

I hope libsdl.org can implement these great ideas. On Oct 13, 2011, at 2:40 AM, Ren? Dudfield wrote:

I’m not against the idea, but it’s not something I’m particularly
interested in myself.
