sdlquake runs just fine in a window, and it also runs with -fullscreen.
But when I try to quit from fullscreen-quake the screen goes black,
and nothing (ctrl-alt-del, ctr-alt-fx etc) restores it. X gets shut down,
but I don’t get a working console back. Needed to do a remote shutdown.
I then tested fullscreen-mode with my own program (never did that before),
and got the same results, blackscreen(ofdeath ;). Numlock still works btw.
I have XFree86 3.3.3.1 on a miro-magic-premium (riva128),
x86-linux-redhat5.1, kernel 2.0.36, SDL 1.0.1.
The changes-list on xfree.org does not list any relevant-looking updates.
Any ideas ?

I get this as well, crash on exit. Only ctrl-alt-del restarts machine.–

The riva128 has a known problem with DGA. I thought it might have been
fixed in the 3.3.5 X server. What card and server do you run Marc?

At home I have an STB Velocity 128 PCI (RIVA 128) and run the NVidia
SVGA server.
At work I have a Diamond Viper 550 AGP (RIVA TNT2) and run the same
server.
I think I get the crash at work as well. For example, I run SDL genesis
emulator fine in fullscreen, but it locks on exit.–
