Game Development : Getting Started

Allright!, I’ll do whatever to go in Game Development, C Programming, C++
Programming, SDL Programming, and OpenGL Programming(Still in Learning,
however), And all of it i’ve already try to learned, Unfortunately The thing
that i still need to learn is EXPERIENCE.

Now then… usually People Gain EXP by Developing in his own, but strange thing
happen to me, it just that i can’t even get an “objective” for myself for
what i’m going to develop, sort of “confusing by myself”, so i have a
thinking, i want to coolaberate with other!, join and help them (and off
course learn from it) with other Project, So where could this place might be

2 Place i’ve been explored, lgdc-Mail-list(Try to get info here, but… it’s to
quite there), and then SourceForge Foundry(can’t get a ‘Game’ Sub category),
but i try ‘3D’ Category, what i found was only a 3D Library

I Just want to Join And Simple-Yet-to-be-Leaned Game project And likely to be
given an assignment then assign myself, And By the way i have no Experience
in ‘Joining’ Development yet, and might my english be bad–
Why use Windows, since there is a door?

that’s more Windows and DirectX Specific, somehow it’s not my type, i’d really
want some written on internet that say’d such thing like “Let’s Develop a
game For Linux only, Join And Develop with us”

Dude, welcome to opensource land. There are probably hundreds or thousands of
game/multimedia projects out there for you to join up with. Have a visit to
http://www.happypenguin.org and browse through the categories. If something
strikes your fancy, vist the game’s web site, join the mailing list, download
the source, and start hacking.
If your an SDL and/or game dev noob, try to find a project with a version
number < 0.5. That means the project is (probably) still in its formative
stages, and there will be more that you can contribute.
There are lots of games I have seen on happypenguin.org or freshmeat.net that
I’ve tinkered with and thought “This will be great with a little more
code/graphics/polish!” You can’t throw a rock around here without hitting a
game “in development.” Heck you could even get some good ideas for available
projects from grepping the game list on libsdl.org
Good luck finding a project!

i agree…

without having experience, it would be hard for someone to say “sure hop on
board” to their project since you would be dead weight in a sense. Not all
people are like that of course and you might find someone who is willing to
make their project into your personal interactive tutorial but…we all
gotta pay our dues…thats just how it goes :stuck_out_tongue:

For coming up w/ your own project idea…is there no game you really really
think is cool? You could try your best to make a version of that game in a
way that was a realistic goal for you. Even if that means making an
overhead, tiled 2d version of Unreal tournament…which would be actualy
pretty awesome come to think of it!

Anyways…a good part of game programming is imagination…so be
imaginative, make something on your own! THEN, after you know more about
stuff, you can earn your way into a learning position since you will have
more actual value to the project (:

ya lazy bum, go code somethin!! ::wink::
