Hardware surfaces with nvidia gfx cards

Hello,
I have played a little bit around with SDL and have gotten simple stuff
like displaying a picture to work. However I have not been able to
create a hardware surface and am wondering what might be the reason for
this.

I downloaded the dll and lib for MSVC 8.0 sp1 and this is thus also what
I use for my SDL coding (C++). My system is very standard, windows xp on
core 2 platform with a geforce 8500 gt graphics card.

I read the article found here:
http://linuxdevcenter.com/pub/a/linux/2003/08/07/sdl_anim.html?page=2
And noticed that a comment says, that direct graphics access is not
possible with (linux) nvidia drivers.
Does this mean that it is not possible to create hardware surfaces with
nvidia cards? And does this further mean that no hardware acceleration
of color conversion, scaling and displaying is possible, and everything
is getting done in software?

Please excuse if this is answered elsewhere, I have looked around in the
documentation and FAQ a bit, but I haven’t been able to find any
conclusive answers. Thanks in advance.

Best regards
Peder

AFAIK, it is not possible with any card, nvidia or ati. It is an Xorg
issue. Im not so sure about Windows, as Linux is my main platform.

Hmm, scaling never was hardware acelerated in SDL 1.2. Dont know about
the rest. All those problems will be solved by SDL 1.3.–
