Hi all

So I have this problem with audio using the latest stable SDL release.
smpeg and linux-heretic both just play loud static the instant SDL tries

to initialize sound.

I’m also running the very latest esd…

What happens if you turn off ESD?
What sound card do you have? What kernel are you running?
What other sound applications work?

I just installed linux-heretic today, and when I paused it in the
background so I could show Maelstrom to a customer, Maelstrom started
with no sound. I exited linux-heretic and restarted Maelstrom and it ran
normally. Running RH6.1 on a slow pentium with a SB16 soundcard. Strange
that I can play my cdplayer, have sound enabled events (so when I click
buttons it makes neat little sounds) and run Maelstrom at the same time,
but linux-heretic refuses to share sound-space with Maelstrom…

Linux-heretic uses the dsp device (/dev/dsp) for sound.
Try to start heretic with esddsp.

Sam: I have managed the “fullscreen OpenGL-problem” in GLHeretic.
I have disabled windowmanager decorations (_XA_MOTIF_WM_HINTS), placed the
window at (0,0) and switched to the special videomode.

I apologize for answering so late - girlfriend came in for the weekend.

This is from my laptop, a RedHat 6.0 machine which has had enlightenment
and Gnome updated. I’ve killed esd for this test:
root at localhost newmusic]# plaympeg
"no_doubt)-don’t_speak(techno_remix).mp3"
Warning: incorrect audio frequency
Warning: incorrect audio format <----weird because it comes out fine with
mpg123 and x11amp.
no_doubt)
-don’t_speak(techno_remix).mp3: MPEG audio stream
<now loud static comes out, like the song but horribly distorted and slowed>
uname -a:
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.2.5-15 #1 Mon Apr 19 23:00:46 EDT 1999 i686
unknown

Everything else that I normally use works, except SDL-linux-heritic, which
has
the same problem.

Here’s some more config info:

[root at localhost newmusic]# sdl-config
Usage: sdl-config [–prefix[=DIR]] [–exec-prefix[=DIR]] [–version] [–libs]
[–cflags]
[root at localhost newmusic]# sdl-config --version
1.0.3
[root at localhost newmusic]# sdl-config --libs
-L/usr/local/lib -lSDL -lpthread
[root at localhost newmusic]# sdl-config --cflags
-I/usr/local/include -I/usr/local/include/SDL -D_REENTRANT

This is a Dell Lattitude laptop. They have some bizzare psuedo-sblaster sound
card.

Can you try the prerelease code:
http://www.devolution.com/~slouken/SDL/release/SDL-1.0.4.tar.gz

Try it with and without esd running.

Thanks!

It already finished compiling. Prelim tests show no change. I’ll reboot and
jiggle the laptop and stuff to make sure. :>
