High-Definition Mouse support in SDL1.2

A few months ago I queried on the possibility of addition of high-definition
support for mice according to this Microsoft advisory article:


(Apparently WM_INPUT has to be used since it directly access the human
interface device. Other methods are either not high definition or even if
they are they may be of high latency (DirectX)).

A few of the responses were encouraging but vague.

Is there any progress?

Is anyone interested in doing it?

If I were about to try it (minimal c programming knowledge), do you know
what I should be careful about?
