Try a boolean variable called “running” or something, and that the game
animation and logic only progresses when this is true, then some key can
switch running between true and false to pause the action.

You just need to have different modes of operation,
that is, different “main loops,” as they’re often
called, that controls the flow control of your
application. When a game is in another mode, like
having been pause, a different loop should be used. I
often use several nested loops to ensure the
representation of persistent game controls, like
hitting Escape for the application menu that let’s you
toggle fullscreen mode, or quit the game.
