Joysticks in SDL don't seem to work for me

Hi I’m trying to use SDL as a input library for my game, I have a gamepad I
want to use in my game, but nothing works, it detects the gamepad, but won’t
respond to any of the button presses or axis events, or the D-pad (hat?). I
use the code on the doc wiki, and have also tried to use, getbutton and code
like that. Could someone help?.
