Lost messages

Every once in awhile someone posts a message by sending it to a specific
individual and CCing this list. Please do it the other way around. Due to the
increase in spam, my email is set to delete anything that comes from a source
that’s not on an accept list. I’m sure others have had to resort to this to
avoid a flood of spam. “sdl at lists.libsdl.org” is on my accept list, most of
you are not. I am aware of these deleted messages only because a log is kept
of their headers. The content is gone forever.

If you want the entire list to see your message, send it directly to the list
and CC the individual. If you don’t want the entire list to see it, then why
CC the list at all?

Thanks,
Jeff

My filter has “To or CC” and this way, it sends all emails that have a
relationship with the list in my SDL’s folder.

You can’t really tell people how to use a protocol that’s more than 20
years old, where the protocol is flexible enough to use To or CC as you
wish (though you are required to put a To). On the other hand, your
spam control is probably much younger, and could try to adapt to this
flexibility.

Asking other to change a 20 years-old habit is pointless, newbies are
soon going to subscribe and we’ll have to educate them over and over,
it’s a neverending story, just to control spam.

(What I would do is first filter mailing lists, and then spam-control on
the rest)

I rarely add the individual’s email when I reply, but the rare times I
did, and I think many other feels this way, when there is a personal
tone in the email, but it is intended to the list (ie, i tell you how to
fix the bug and I ask if your kids are still trying to program as well).
This way, the email filters of that person may send the email in his
"personal" folder instead.

Simon
