MacOS X - Underlying implementation of display surfaces

Hi,

I’m trying to understand how SDL is implemented on various platforms.

The Apple docs are clear as mud and I don’t have access to a MacOS box,
so can’t experiment (I’m an active learner…).

Please could someone enlighten me; how are SDL display surfaces
implemented on MacOS? Descriptions relative to/contrasting with X11
and/or Win32 would be ideal.

As well as a general explaination, I would like an answer to one
specific question, which is, ‘windows’ on both X11 and Win32 are
hierarchical, is this the case on MacOS X?
