Need Guide To Compile Windows SDL 2 & Setup In Code::Blocks

Hi,

I can’t wait for the official release of SDL 2 in May.
Want to get started now on a P.C. Windows SDL 2 game project now.

I need an idiot’s guide that clearly describes how to do the following on P.C. Windows:

  • Compile/build: SDL 2, SDL_Image, SDL_Mixer, & SDL_TTF
  • Setup SDL 2 and support libraries listed above in current Code::Blocks

If someone can explain the above or point me to a site that explains it then I can get started.
Thanks!------------------------

Thanks for posting this. I’ve been monitoring this list, waiting to see
something along these lines, for a long time.

If someone finds time to answer your question, great. If not, I can
understand why completing actual development of the libraries might have to
take priority.

Well, when I tried building SDL2 on Windows some time ago, I just
imported the Visual Studio project into Code::Blocks, tweaked the
SDL_config_windows.h file a bit (to disable libraries I didn’t have
installed) and pretty much built it. Then I just copied the header and
library files where relevant. No need bothering with SDL_main since
MinGW doesn’t need WinMain. This is pretty much the hack method to
building it, though :stuck_out_tongue:

The biggest issue I had is MinGW not coming with DirectX (or better
said, the version bundled with Code::Blocks). This left me with the
multimedia API only which has a 500ms latency. I didn’t have time to
figure how to sort it out (I had an expo the next day!) so I just had
to get somebody here to build SDL2 for me  (thanks Sam Lantinga for
that!)

An “Idiot’s Guide” is asking for someone to spend a lot of time explaining
all of the steps in detail. Do you have a Mercurial client installed? Are
you using CMake?

Semi-related question.

For SDL1.2, I just used the mingw builds (headers + dlls) that
are available on the website. Are there similar builds for SDL2
anywhere? They would make life much easier.

Alternatively, would someone be so kind to make them?On Tue, 23 Apr 2013 11:25:44 -0400 Jonathan Dearborn wrote:

If you’re making an Idiot’s Guide you’d want to skip Mercurial. There
are snapshots every so often that come in a zip file. Just grab that
and save yourself the headache (that’s what I do).
