Need help compiling SDL game on win32 platform

I was hoping someone could help me succesfully compile an SDL-based game on
windows with Visual Basic C++ 6.

I’ve copied the game source code files and all the SDL development files
into my Project directory and added them to to the project including the
"SDLmain.lib", “SDL.lib” and SDL.dll files

I tried tried to build the EXE file but get this error below relating to the
SDL.h file. Would greatly appreciate any help in remedying the situation.

Its microsoft visual C++ not microsoft visual basic C++ :stuck_out_tongue:

how are you #include 'ing SDL.h?

like this?

#include “SDL.h”

or like this?

#include “SDL/SDL.h”

if its the first way, try the second way. If that doesnt work, reread the
directions for installing SDL with MSVC++ and make sure you have put the

The links you tried to follow is for Visual C++ (not Basic).
But if you mean C++ you can go into the ‘Project’ -> ‘Settings’ menu
(Alt+F7).
Then choose the Tab ‘C/C++’ and select category ‘Preprocessor’. In the
’Additional include directories’ you add the path the the folder that contains the
file ‘SDL.h’.

Another way is to specify the path directly like this: #include
"C:\SDL\Include\SDL.h"

If you ARE using Visual Basic. I dont really know if its possible to use SDL
under Basic. If its possible, you must replace the headerfile with something
more basic-specific (if you can add lib-files, that is).

But as for now, i dont think that SDL has support for VB.
Perhaps someone else knows this better than me?

Hi,

you should tell your compiler where to find your files. It’s not recommended
to put all external files into your project, because you’d then have to do
the same for each new project too.

In Visual C++, do the following:

Goto the menu and choose Tools->Options. Select the “Directories” tab. Make
sure that the left combox reads “all environments”. On the right side,
select “include directories” and type the folder of your external headers,
in your case the SDL files. Do the same for “source” and “libraries”, and
add the “src”- and “lib” directory respectivaly.

For headers files, you can now write:

#include “sdl.h”

And your library files can be added by choosing “Project->Settings” from the
menu, and typ them in the textfield with the other .lib files.

You don’t have to add .dll files to your project. They are loaded from the
project-directory as soon as you start your application.
