Networkinging in Linux and Windows:Imp

Hello everyone,
i am developing a muliplayer network component of a first person shooter
game.I am looking for the layer or API as SDL which brings platform
independence i.e runs both on linux and windows.
My questions is:

Does SDL provide the necessay facility for developing the network layer? On
the site, it says theres a library available but how far is it deveopled and
does it support the full scale networking for linux sockets and winsockets?

Look at SDL_net or NET2 at the libraries pages at www.libsdl.org
