New User Question

Hi All,
I’ve been meaning to take a look at sdl for some time now.

I have downloaded and compiled the package for testing but I’m confused about a
few things.
Can I use the library by itself with a application I created, or compile one of the
test examples?
When I call the initialize routine, does it access my /dev/fb0 device and read
the screen info from there?

I have been using nanoX but would like to bypass it, but it seems like I could not;
the test seem to run but I don’t see any screen activity.

It could be I’m missing something - being new. Could someone tell me of a simple test
program I can easily build? I’m running on an ARM9 linux platform. My pixel format is
555 and I’m using a touchscreen but I don’t see tslib support in the sdl package.

Much thanks.
Jr.

Junior,

I have had very little problems with SDL on Linux. As far as some of the what does it access I will leave that answer to someone better qualified. But for the TS SDL is indepenedent of this. I use a TS on my system (I have used both MTOUCH and ELO) and Linux will just read the TS as a mouse/pointer device. You can then use the event loop to read the location on the screen, through the SDL_MOUSEMOTION or SDL_MOUSEBUTTONDOWN(UP) events. Same thing for keyboard events. I have not used nanoX but I am currently using Fedora core (4,5,6) and I have started to use Unbutu. All seem to work well with SDL.

I ran the test problem and can’t seem to figureout where is the resolution comming from.
I’m using fbcon and I’m sure my fbdev driver is saying the resolution is 320x240. so
why is the test program seem to be using 1600x1200, 1408x1056,etc… ?

Does anyone have any idea?
