No events for mouse clicks?

I don’t have a demo set up but does anybody else have a problem where a
mouse click is not considered an SDL event? Single mouse clicks, on
various Linux computers and various mice, do not seem to generate mouse
clicks, but mouse motion causes an event. Is this normal?
