OLPC / Geode performance

'lo,
I work for an embedded firm, our next hardware platform will be 5536/GeodeLX
(500mhz-ish) based… and I’m curious about SDL performance under linux (or
any other free OS). Graphics speed is important, 24/32bit 800x600 should be
a bare minimum for resolution. I’ve done plenty of low level work work with
the 5535/geode-classic (mediagx)… and that can be made to do alright with
raw/direct hardware access… but the linux drivers for it are slow as snot
(10% of the relevant speed or worse). Does the newer platform also have
this issue ? I’d really like to see SDL used on this platform, it’d make my
life a lot easier for when moving the code base to other platforms and such
in the future.

IIRC, directfb has an hardware accelerated driver for geode. IMHO, SDLs
strength is its cross plattform abstraction not its raw speed.

It sounds like you are not suggesting that SDL is causing the slow
speed, but the Linux drivers. You might get a good answer on this
list, but you might want to instead find which GNU/Linux distros
support the platform you’re working with, and ask them instead. On Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 8:57 PM, Will Langford wrote:

hi,

the OLPC seems to be able to run things fairly fast.

Best to ask on the OLPC lists I think.
