OT: Project Structure

Does anyone have any links to sites or articles on good project structure
for games using automake and cvs? Seems like everyone does things
differently and I am looking for step-by-step reasoning and examples. (I am
considering switching over to a deep project structure and am relatively
clueless

I did look at the “Pirates Ho!” article but am somewhat confused as to why
the “data” directory would be in the “src” directory instead of off of the
project root. How does this affect a game looking for the data files? I
guess that I am primarily curious about proper game specific “make and
install” on various systems.
