Problems sharing the soundcard

I have gotten a complaint from one or two users of my SDL-based game,
to the effect that my game won’t “share the soundcard” with other
programs. When they start up my game, other programs like Winamp
suddenly fall silent.

The one user that provided me with specifics is running Win98 with
some version of the SBLive! card.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be the cause of
this, and/or what I should tell these users?

What version of SDL are they using? The “sharing” access was changed
between two earlier versions of SDL.

Hey b, I used to have this problem since I ran Win98 for 4 years

straight as my main workstation with winamp and other games/apps.
Winamp, especially older versions (2.6-2.7) really REALLY hated sharing
sound with other programs on Windows 98. You can tell your
users/customers to try these three things… First, to try Winamp 3
(which I personally hate), or on Winamp 2 use a different output plug-in
selected in preferences, or third… tell them to upgrade their OS. =)
I just saw Sam’s post, and well he is usually right… so it might be
SDL’s fault, but my expererience with Win98, Winamp and sharing sound was
very harsh. I couldn’t play Age of Empires or CS or Quake with sound if
I had Winamp in the background playing until I started experimenting and
tweaking with output plugins in winamp. So, if is the problem isn’t the
older version of SDL like Sam believes it is… consider this as being
the problem. =)

Hope it helps a little…

You hit the nail on the head. Turns out they were using an older
version of SDL. Upgrading to 1.2.5 solved the problem.
