Problems with alpha surfaces

can anyone help me with creating alpha surfaces…

i just want an “in-between buffer” that has the same format as the
screen…

all my attempts seems to screw things up in my application…

my biggest problem is that the alpha channel seems not work correctly
…shadows are not transparent and have always merged with the black of my
"in-between buffer"

Im some kind confused… i tested hundreds of combinations but not one
seemed to be the correct one…

(i think that semantics in alpha blits are correct… ;-(

Many Thanx to all who will give answers ,explanations or sample code…

I find that I have to turn src alpha and colorkey off to get get things to
work correct with alpha surfaces. I took me a while to figure out what I
missed.
