Question on Codecs and SDL

Hello,

I have a beginner’s question. I am building a game using SDL and there is a
section where I must play an introduction movies. The artist is asking me in
what kind of avi codec do I want the movie file to be done and I really
don’t know which codecs are supported by SDL. It has to be a codec that is
commonly used by all versions of windows.

Thanks,

Pancho

SDL does not do decoding of movies itself; you must use another library in
conjunction with it to do that. Some libraries provide convenient decoding
to SDL surfaces or overlays, however. pygame’s http://www.pygame.org/
Movie class uses SMPEG http://www.lokigames.com/development/smpeg.php3 to
decode MPEG, for instance – but that’s still not part of SDL proper.

In other words, asking “which codecs are supported by SDL” is (probably)
based on a misconception. Asking “which codecs are commonly used under
Windows” first may be more productive, though unfortunately I can’t answer
that reliably – anyone else?

The same applies to other image and sound file or stream formats, by the
way; SDL_image, SDL_sound, and SDL_mixer are commonly used in those cases.

Thanks,

Pancho

I suggest you XviD codec (GNU LGPL Library).
Very high compression and quality.

You can distribute the XviD Codec for MS Windows with your game and you can
play video with easy Windows API.

BUT, I suggest you to use XviD core Library. It is cross-platform.
I never use it before! ;-)> ----- Original Message -----
