Report on SDL Maelstrom

The Maelstrom port to SDL is coming along nicely:

  • The interface is done, with updates to the SDL example libraries.
  • The basic functionality is limping along with some timing problems.
  • Networking hasn’t been tested, though it’s all in there.
  • BeOS version compiles, but doesn’t link because of the free compiler

I want to add a few features to the final port:

  • Much better network dialog and error handling
  • AI for computer opponents!

Of course, the final release depends on Andrew Welch’s okay,
and may end up being a commercial product (Yay! $$$)

See ya!

heh – well, what exactly do you mean by this?On 7/1/98 12:49 AM, Sam Lantinga wrote:

Anyway, I was just referring to our talking a while ago about porting
Ambrosia’s games to the other platforms. Maelstrom could be the first,
even though it’s really a complete rewrite. SDL is the library I was
planning to use.

We also are working on cross-platform frameworks – it would be
interesting to get you in on the action, or at the very least, give you a
look at what we’re doing. Are you working full-time for anyone currently? On 7/1/98 1:02 AM, Sam Lantinga wrote:

I am currently working for Pacific Bell Mobile Services, but my job
will be probably be moving to Dallas without me in about 8 months.
I am tentatively looking for another job right now, and don’t have a
problem leaving early.

Why?

What salary range are you looking for? Would locating in, say, Rochester
be adverse to you?On 7/1/98 1:10 AM, Sam Lantinga wrote:

Hey, we could test the networking out, like we did a while ago on the
non-SDL version, if you want

I’m sure he’s probably very busy doing what he does, but maybe he’d be a
good person to attempt at the macos port of SDL.

Keep in mind that the macos doesn’t use sockets (STREAMS), so that makes
cross platform networking hard unless you add a network API into SDL
(sweet!

That’s out of our range for the position we’ll have available; good luck
on your job search however!

I wouldn’t necessarily mind relocating to Rochester, but I definitely want
to meet in person before considering it.

Makes sense.±-------------------------±----------------------------------+

Is that close to Rochester?

Not really – CT is about 5-6 hours away, depending on where in CT.

What is the range for the position you’ll have available?

We’re looking for an entry-level programmer; we’re already speccing out
the cross-platform APIs, coding conventions, etc. Someone with a clue,
decent Windows knowledge, and enthusiasm is all we really need. You are
overqualified, really.

Is it a cross-platform game programming position?

Yes.±-------------------------±----------------------------------+
