Mike Shaffry’s “Game Coding Complete” is a comprehensive introduction to all
things game-related. I would recommend it in a heartbeat. Gamasutra is a
valuable resource for all kinds of articles related to games. “Computer
Graphics: Principles and Practices, 2nd ed.” by Foley et al. is a fantastic
introduction to the computer-based graphics creation, covering the mathematical
details. For the more pragmatic programmer, NeHe’s 3D tutorials seem to be great
(although I haven’t read them). “Event-based programming: Taking Events to the
Limit” by Ted Faison is a treatise on why one should use events to connect
components (“It’s the Coupling, stupid.”). It might be worthwhile to examine
existing game engines, like iD Tech that’s used in the Quake/Doom games, or the
open-source ones, like Torque.
