RLE encoding bmp's

Are palleted bmp’s used alot? RLE compression only works with 8 bit
palleted bitmaps so Im wondering if SDL could really use the ability to load
compressed bitmaps.

A lot of people don’t realize it but RLE compression CAN benefit even
24-bit images. However, the only format I know of that actually did it
was PCX. The right way of doing it, I think, would be to run-length
encode the red, green and blue channels of the image separately.

But then again, I don’t think RLE compression would be that useful. BMP
doesn’t support it for bit depths >8, and the vast majority of BMP
creation and reading software (including the Windows paintbrush) like to
pretend that BMP compression doesn’t exist…–
