SBlive!

Does somebody know why SDL fails to work with my SBLive under Linux? All
SDL applications (also Loki’s Heroes of Might and Magic III) produce
distorted sound. Like if it is played rapidly in chuncks and it also
seems to be repeating. I use now the latest verion of SDL (1.1.3) but
also the stable 1.08 had
the problem. I tried also a number of emu10k1 drivers, but none of them
work. I’m now using one of
the latest daily binaries.

All other programs work find with sound…

Not sure, but everything works fine on my work (a-hem!) system that has a
SB-Live in it. Of course, I’m using the ALSA driver, which may be the
difference. Open Source, baby!

But I can report that Heavy Gear works like a charm.

If not your base configuration could be incorrect.

Oh, and I’ve been informed that the Creative SBLive! drivers are open
source. Where have I BEEN.

I found that the Alsa drivers are superior in quality to the OSS ones. I
suggest you move to the alsa drivers. I have been using them since the
SBlive drivers went Open source. And they were quite simple to install
and get running. Although I suggest you read the alsa howto (or maybe
the readme I havent installed alsa for a while.) it tells how to get OSS
compatability drivers installed (although it is pretty obvious) which is
useful.

as a note. Mandrake 7.1 includes ALSA drivers (if you tell it to install
them), you need to tell it in the conf.modules file though . You also
need to do some script hacking to get it to load the OSS-compatibility
stuff. otherwise it cannot set the mixer. my fix was rather err device
dependant

Well, I sorted it out. The distortion was to some buffer overruns, but
it is pretty much fixed now
in the newest emu10k1 drivers. But the best solution is to set
SDL_AUDIODRIVER to dsp insteat of
dma, I wish I would know where the possible choices of SDL_AUDIODRIVER
where documented???
So far I found out that I can use oss, esd, dsp and dma.
