SDL 1.3 and Mac OS X (10.5)

So, after hearing some of the fuss about compiling SDL 1.3, I decided I’d
give it a try. The biggest problem is that it depends on AppKit Framework,
which costs $$ from my understanding. Okay, well, it seems the big problem
is the touch interface for events, so I decided to do this:
./configure --without-input-tslib
Well, I let configure do it’s thing, and it gave me the thumbs up, but doing
make was still no dice with this error:

With MacPorts installed (i.e. /opt/local/bin/autoconf), the following
sequence works for me:
hg pull; hg update; ./autogen.sh; ./configure; make; sudo make install;
cd test; ./configure make

I was looking into moving dim3 up to 1.3, but all the errors scared me
off (I have to spend my time coding dim3.) But I might get back into
this tonight or tomorrow if I have the time.

It seems that whoever was working on the OS X version of SDL 1.3 only
compiled it in 10.6. For instance, the NSTouch stuff was introduced in
10.6 (if the docs are to be believed.) I bet there’s a lot more of that
in there.

I need SDL to start at 10.4, which by the XCode project seems to be the
point. First thing is all the non-10.4 stuff needs to be figured out
and put behind a switch. If all these just hook into events, then you
just won’t get the events. If they are called outside of that, then
more trouble is waiting.

What all the collisions are with AppKit/OpenGL/etc is I don’t know.
There might need to be multiple targets to deal with this, i.e.,
including AppKit in some builds and OpenGL in others, etc.

I’m not even sure where to begin (probably will create just a 10.4
target and go from there), but it seems to be a big mess on the OS X
side if < 10.6.

Great to hear someone is looking into this. I too am interested in getting SDL running on 10.4 and 10.5. I am currently using it on 10.6, but need to release a game that is compatible with 10.4 and above. Had had no success with this so far… seems like downgrading to SDL 1.2 might be my only option unless this gets fixed, as I don’t have the skills to fix these kinds of things myself.

If you or anyone else gets this fixed, that would be wonderful. :slight_smile:

Andreas offered the idea of macports - has anyone had success - I’d try it
out, but the only mac I have access to is my girlfriend’s, and I won’t get a
chance to use it until I see her again, which will probably be Sunday. I
assume what that does it tricks ./configure into thinking I’m using linux
instead of mac, and it avoids the appkit package?

I’d much prefer to not have to install more software just to get SDL 1.3 to
build on versions of Mac prior to 10.6, and I don’t want to dish out the
money to buy Snow Leopard for my girlfriend (I don’t have that sort of money
laying around).

I’ll peek through the SDL source code and see what’s going on and maybe
identify what we can take out without breaking cross-compatibility, or at
least what options should be set for Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5.

Sam, who is the current Mac port maintainer? Any tips we can get?

Doh, I apologize for my previous “thumbs up”. My macports compile was
actually on 10.6.5 …can’t keep track of these OSX version upgrades and
should have checked the About box and the email subject line better.
So don’t bother trying this - it won’t work unless the mentioned #define
