SDL 1.3: the issue of compatibility with other libraries

Hi all,

I’m trying to determine what the state of SDL is from the point of view of
SDL_NET, SDL_NET2, and SDL_FastEvents. I cannot find any documentation
stating which version of SDL has been used for SDL_NET, SDL_NET2, and
SDL_FastEvents.

We are developing on OSes that support threading, with multitouch displays,
client-server communication, interactive graphics. So we believe these
libraries will be useful.

Hello !

I would like to know if there are plans to integrate SDL_net, SDL_net2
and
SDL_fastevents into SDL 1.3 core.

I don’t think so. SDL should only provide
the basic things and let other libs do the higher stuff.

Nice to see people are still interested in net2 and fastevents. I
wrote them using SDL 1.2. I do not know if they work with, or are even
needed, with SDL 1.3.

When SDL 1.3 is released I will test them and get them working with
1.3. If you try them with 1.3 and find any trouble using them please
let me know and I will try to get them working with 1.3.

Net2 is based on SDL_net and the SDL mutex code so it “should” just
work. The same is true of fastevents. SDL 1.3 is supposed to contain
atomic operations that may make it possible to make those libraries
slightly faster, which would be fun to do.

Please stay in touch and let me know about your experiences using the
libraries with SDL 1.3. I’m still out here and still interested in
making sure that the libraries work for 1.3 if they are needed.
