SDL 2.0.1 Drawing/Touch issue on Sony Devices

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

Hallo Developers,
I’m working on a project which should run on win/linux/macosX … and
android now.

First of all the new SDL is really great and do what it should… mostly.

Until I did my job on the PC ports I started a port to android, which
was pretty easy. Testet everything on Nexus and HTC Smartphones, it
worked out of the box. Great!

But than I testet everything on a Sony Phone:
Sony Xperia E Stock 4.1.1 -> Blackscreen
Sony Xperia Z Omnirim 4.3 -> Drawing, but touch doesn’t work.

So because of the problem I compiled somthing really simple like the
example code on http://wiki.libsdl.org/SDL_RenderPresent and tested it
on the Xperia E. The result: Backscreen. On HTC and Nexus: Works!

So it seems to be a devicespecific SDL-Problem. Is there somebody how
have the problem too (and may solved it)? Should I open a bugreport on
bugzilla? Can I help the android-sdl developers with informations to
get it fixed?

Best regards

Ops, yes, you need to put the bmp file manually in assets so it gets put in
the apk. It seems SDL is working fine though , which of course makes
finding the reason for the black screen more complex

When im looking to the test code there is nothing special on the first

May be there is an wrong project setup. I will check and hopefully

Ok, ich did some fast tests and found the problem! Don’t know if its a
big thing. The tests work great out of the box on the HTC and the
Xperia E. So I changed the stuff I used in my app and found the
problem in the manifest file. The problem is the landscape mode:
android:screenOrientation=“landscape” .

Adding this to the tests:

    • HTC One Mini -> works great.
    • Xperia E -> shows an black screen

I think thats a bug or not?
Thanks for the great support!

Yes, thanks :), it works now. Xperia E do what it should i think.
When im looking to the test code there is nothing special on the
first look. Tommorow I will have enougth time to take a closer

May be there is an wrong project setup. I will check and hopefully
find the problem and then report it to you. Or did you have

Hallo Developers, I’m working on a project which
should run on win/linux/macosX … and android now.

First of all the new SDL is really great and do what
it should… mostly.

Until I did my job on the PC ports I started a port
to android, which was pretty easy. Testet everything
on Nexus and HTC Smartphones, it worked out of the
box. Great!

But than I testet everything on a Sony Phone: Sony
Xperia E Stock 4.1.1 -> Blackscreen Sony Xperia Z
Omnirim 4.3 -> Drawing, but touch doesn’t work.

So because of the problem I compiled somthing really
simple like the example code on
http://wiki.libsdl.org/SDL_RenderPresent and tested
it on the Xperia E. The result: Backscreen. On HTC
and Nexus: Works!

So it seems to be a devicespecific SDL-Problem. Is
there somebody how have the problem too (and may
solved it)? Should I open a bugreport on bugzilla?
Can I help the android-sdl developers with
informations to get it fixed?

Best regards

Hello,

With Daniel, we have confirmation the problem occurs because of the common
EGL code for X11/Android ( https://hg.libsdl.org/SDL/rev/ac4ce59c40e7 )
An .APK based on the prior version was working whereas the one after was
not.

Without access to the device and no meaningful information on the log it
can be tricky to figure out the problem. Even more so because
testrendercopyex and testgles appear to work fine. You mentioned these apps
work fine in portrait but not on landscape, is it also the case with SDL’s
tests? Or do these work in either orientation?
Anything in particular that you are doing during initialization, any other
specifics about these apps that you can share, settings in
AndroidManifest.xml, etc?

Hi Gabriel,
the SDL-Test doesn’t work in landscape mode. Like in the Apps of
Sylvain und mine, a black screen occures in landscape mode.

The only thing to change in testrendercopyex and testgles to make this
test not working is to add in the AndroidManifest.xml this line in the
Activity-Tag:
android:screenOrientation=“landscape”

Orientationchange during initialisation (onCreate-method) with:
setRequestedOrientation(ActivityInfo.SCREEN_ORIENTATION_LANDSCAPE);
doesn’t make a difference. Both variants are leading to a black screen
in the Xperia E.

Thanks for your help.

Daniel

the Xperia E. So I changed the stuff I used in my app and found
the problem in the manifest file. The problem is the landscape
mode: android:screenOrientation=“landscape” .

Adding this to the tests: - HTC One Mini -> works great. - Xperia E
-> shows an black screen

I think thats a bug or not? Thanks for the great support!

Yes, thanks :), it works now. Xperia E do what it should
i think. When im looking to the test code there is
nothing special on the first look. Tommorow I will have
enougth time to take a closer look.

May be there is an wrong project setup. I will check and

did you have another idea what I could do?

Ops, yes, you need to put the bmp file manually in
assets so it gets put in the apk. It seems SDL is
working fine though , which of course makes finding the
reason for the black screen more complex  El nov 9,

Hi Gabriel,
the SDL-Test doesn’t work in landscape mode.

Orientationchange during initialisation (onCreate-method) with:
setRequestedOrientation(ActivityInfo.SCREEN_ORIENTATION_LANDSCAPE);
doesn’t make a difference. Both variants are leading to a black screen
in the Xperia E.

Thanks for your help.

Best regards,

Hello,

With Daniel, we have confirmation the problem occurs because of
the common EGL code for X11/Android (

Hi Gabriel,
the bug I found is a bit different. Changing the initialisation like
described ( SDL_Init(SDL_INIT_EVERYTHING) ) didn’t make a difference.

On the Xperia E the app didn’t crashes. It seems that it runs well in
the background but the screen is black.

Did some more tests and found a strange thing (see the videos I send
you). When i’m starting the app a black screen occures. Things which
are not written in SDL will be drawn like ads. When im pressing the
power-button twice and slide to unlock the app will be drawn in wrong
way and is unusable. It seems that the x-y scaling is inverted and the
rotation is wrong (see end of the second vid).

The same occures when i’m using the tests of the sdl test suite. So
it’s reproduceable :).

May be this helps a bit :-/… hopefully.

Hi Gabriel, the SDL-Test doesn’t work in landscape mode. Like in
the Apps of Sylvain und mine, a black screen occures in landscape
mode.

The only thing to change in testrendercopyex and testgles to make
this test not working is to add in the AndroidManifest.xml this
line in the Activity-Tag: android:screenOrientation=“landscape”

Orientationchange during initialisation (onCreate-method) with:
setRequestedOrientation(ActivityInfo.SCREEN_ORIENTATION_LANDSCAPE);

doesn’t make a difference. Both variants are leading to a black screen

in the Xperia E.

Thanks for your help.

Best regards, Daniel

Hello,

With Daniel, we have confirmation the problem occurs
because of the common EGL code for X11/Android (
https://hg.libsdl.org/SDL/rev/ac4ce59c40e7 ) An .APK based
on the prior version was working whereas the one after was
not.

First of all the new SDL is really
great and do what it should…
mostly.

Until I did my job on the PC ports I
started a port to android, which was
pretty easy. Testet everything on
Nexus and HTC Smartphones, it worked
out of the box. Great!

But than I testet everything on a
Sony Phone: Sony Xperia E Stock 4.1.1
-> Blackscreen Sony Xperia Z Omnirim
4.3 -> Drawing, but touch doesn’t
work.

So because of the problem I compiled
somthing really simple like the
example code on
http://wiki.libsdl.org/SDL_RenderPresent

and tested it on the Xperia E. The result:

Backscreen. On HTC and Nexus: Works!

So it seems to be a devicespecific

bugzilla? Can I help the android-sdl
developers with informations to get
it fixed?

Is there a way I can help you? If you did some changes you can send me
a test apk. I will test it immediately on my device :).

I did give this bug a fighting chance  I tried testgles with
android:screenOrientation=“landscape” on my Nexus 4 (Android 4.3),
on a Genymotion VM for Android 4.1.1, and on my Asus TF101 tablet,
it seems to work just fine.

So, it looks like I need a test case that fails on these devices,
or a VM that can reproduce this somehow in order to figure out this
issue.

2013/11/12 Daniel Knobe <@Daniel_Knobe>

Hi Gabriel, the bug I found is a bit different. Changing the
initialisation like described ( SDL_Init(SDL_INIT_EVERYTHING) )
didn’t make a difference.

On the Xperia E the app didn’t crashes. It seems that it runs well
in the background but the screen is black.

Did some more tests and found a strange thing (see the videos I
send you). When i’m starting the app a black screen occures. Things
which are not written in SDL will be drawn like ads. When im
pressing the power-button twice and slide to unlock the app will be
drawn in wrong way and is unusable. It seems that the x-y scaling
is inverted and the rotation is wrong (see end of the second vid).

The same occures when i’m using the tests of the sdl test suite.
So it’s reproduceable :).

May be this helps a bit :-/… hopefully.

We tried the patch (https://bugzilla.libsdl.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1895) but
with no success.

We tried also to force the window resize by sending RESIZE events,
Grabbing/Raising the Window, with no success.

Also try a call to “android_egl_context_restore()”.

Any idea to debug that ? why would the landscape fail, but not the portrait
? Any idea to unactive the screen rotation while being in landscape ?

Thanks,

Sylvain
