SDL accepted as GSoC 2013 Mentoring Organization

It is my pleasure to announce that SDL has been accepted as mentoring
organization for Google Summer of Code (GSoC) 2013!

After a break from GSoC in 2012 and since Sam and Ryan are quite busy
these days, I’ve volunteered to be the GSoC Org Admin for SDL and will
be joined as mentor by Gabriel Jacobo on 2 projects ideas around adding
some visual tests and developing a meta-build system. With the SDL2.0
ABI freeze in place, the general theme this year was narrowed to ideas
that help create a top quality SDL 2.0 release rather than adding fancy
new features. Details on the projects can be found on the SDL GSoC page. [1]

Anyone interested should apply via the GSoC’s Melange site. [2] Student
applications open: April 22 at 19:00 UTC - the GSoC help/FAQ page [3]
has plenty of information as to what a student proposal should look like:

It is our hope to get some great students to contribute to SDL. Mailing
list members, please consider applying to GSoC/SDL … or helping spread
the word that GSoC/SDL has some interesting, rewarding and challenging
summer opportunities.

Thanks,
Andreas

I’m not volunteering (among other things, I’m not currently a student,
and I have a few library projects that I’m working on right now), but
just in case someone takes up the “new build system” route, this link:
http://gittup.org/tup/index.html
has a link to a pdf with the basic algorithm for makefiles (the “Build
System Rules and Algorithms” link). I personally wouldn’t use tup’s
algorithm for anything “general purpose” other than a testing
framework attached to a version control system, and if you want make
then even Visual Studio provides a version, but it might be useful for
early stages of a multi-stage system.> Date: Sat, 13 Apr 2013 10:16:15 -0700
