SDL/GL Bitmap fonts

Is anyone here using GL Bitmap fonts with SDL?

In the past, I have loaded GL bitmap fonts under X with
XLoadFont and GLXUseXFont. This is, obviously, nonportable.
However, a liberal sprinkling of #ifdefs will at least allow
me to use GLX/WGL/AGL and be portable on the Big 3.

The problem with this is that the XLoadFont call requires
a reference to the Xlib Display. Using SDL to initialize
my display, I don’t have such a reference. Is there a way
to obtain the Display through an SDL structure or call?

Alas, this approach is not very attractive. What I really
want are some good-old-fashioned portable bitmap files
which define the glyphs for various fonts. Then I can just
load em up in a portable way and generate GL bitmap display
lists. So, does anyone know where I can obtain some nice
bitmap fonts with a fairly simple file format?

Thanks,

Use Nate Miller’s glTexFont library… there’s a link to it from the Nehe
Productions page, unfortunately I don’t have the link at the top of my head.
It’s VERY nice… even I like it!

Thanks,
JW
