I got SDL compile so I moved on to SDL_image… oh boy.
On the configure script, it is complaining that it can not find libjpeg,
libpng, or zlib.

Just get these lib from your local distro website and
install/compile/upgrade them. **
They are “very” probably required by SDL_Image.
** (Assuming you are runnig a linux box. But these info apply to other os
