Sdl init failed, no available video device

I had to reinstall my Gentoo Linux and I have found a weird problem. I
downloaded and compiled sdl 1.2.11 correctly, but when I try to launch
an application that uses SDL I get an error about failed initialization,
no available video device. What can be the cause of this problem?–

Try installing development packages for X11 and rebuild SDL from
./configure and onwards.On Wed, 11 Apr 2007, Roger D Vargas wrote:

In gentoo there is no such concept of development packages. Yes, I can
recompile the whole Xorg, but I feel that it is useless.

Do you have X enabled in your USE flags? The SDL package compiles without
X11 support if you don’t

Hmm, I think I dont have it, but I supposed it was enabled by default
for SDL.
