I wonder if I can attach a file containing some code from within the mailing list.
I have an up-to-date version of SDL_LayeredDisplay including all the last remarks
from other members and I’d like to avoid putting code directly in the email since
the indentation will be crappy.

You should probably get yourself a Subversion repository and put it there?
Sam would need to make the call on this, but I suspect that this kind
of functionality isn’t going to be included in SDL proper (there’s
tons of great functionality in SDL_mixer, SDL_gfx, SDL_image and so
on, for example, because they want to keep the core SDL library as
lean as possible).
If that turns out to be the case (and that there isn’t another SDL
add-on project where that would make sense and could integrate it),
you should pick up some hosting place to put the code at. I like
Google Code (http://code.google.com/hosting/) myself (fast,
no-nonsense), but I might be a bit biased. 
You could do as I did, and make yourself a “personal projects” project
that I use for the little things that I intend on being open source,
but that have not been grown to the point of being their own project
