SDL Logos

Hi all,

Here is a logo idea to take a look at. I’ve made a B/W and color version in 3 sizes.

Hey! That’s a nifty concept. It’s a “layer” over graphics.

Nice but seems to me to be a bit to precise and CAD-like. Now, if the cover were being blown off, or torn away, and there was some gamin’ stuff going on under the hood… that’d be awesome. On Mon, 29 Jul 2002 21:05:49 -0700 “Robert Wohleb” wrote:

itself from the simple idea.

If you mixed this concept with either the gears or primitives concepts
It would be interesting to see how it looks and feels.
If you went for the gears aspect you could have an MNG version that
showed the gears animating underneath the SDL transparent parts.

Anyway something like this gets my vote.

Let me first say that I have no artistic talent whatsoever,
so excuse the crappy nature of the attached image.

Taking the simplicity idea further, here is a quick example I put
together using my trusty mouse and the vector drawing options in Paint
Shop Pro. Obviously the proportions need to be worked on a bit, but I
think the idea of things fitting togther in a simple manner ( Maybe a
jigsaw type thing ) and also with the D having a slight 3D effect (
which needs improving ), it may work.

Anyway it is thown in to the pool of ideas, to either inspire or to be
thrown out.

I’ll try this tonight. I was also thinking along the same lines. I have yet
to get a good efeect yet though.

As all geeks do, I like gears. I thought using one in this scenario would be
ok. However, I haven’t generated a good looking gear yet. Hopefully, tonight
I will have some more samples with gears, etc.

As for the text being on the logo, I usually prefer not to. Some of the best
logos either make the text the actualy logo, or leave them separate. Another
reason to leave the text off to the side in this design is scalability. This
design scales because the overall shape is very recognizable at all sizes. A
lot of the detail is lost in a small size, but that is secondary. The text
would only clutter the design when small, and couldn’t really be read
anyways.

I second that. I really like it (sorry, haven’t read the rest of the

the thing I like the best about it is that there are no gears, and yet
it still conveys visually what SDL is :-)On Tue, 2002-07-30 at 01:04, nbs wrote:

Yes! Very decent, though I think it’s too long-- why not put the S D and L
letters inside the box part, and the ‘Simple DirectMedia Layer’ text
underneath it all, in smaller writing. Then it’s a neat whole; I think the
two parts look a little separate at the moment. On Tuesday 30 July 2002 05:05, Robert Wohleb wrote:

I like it too, but I think that instead of the hexagons there should be
gears. Then it will truly convey what SDL is - a simle layer (=smooth
surface above) over a relatively complex stuff (gears below).
I don’t mean gears as the main thing of the logo, as suggested in other
logos. I mean gears to show complexity, as though you’ve opened a
gear-powered watch.
Here’s the inside of my old watch, for illustration…
http://members.lycos.co.uk/romik12345/sdl_logo/watch-inside.png

Also, I think it will be better if the letters “S-D-L” will be part of
the logo, and not on the side…

What do you think about something like this?
http://members.lycos.co.uk/romik12345/sdl_logo/sdl-logo2.png

(Of course in the actual logo it should be a few generic meta-file
gears, not a photo like here).

RK.

No offense… but pbth! I just don’t like gears. So many open-source
projects use gears in their logos today it’s not even funny. So,
personally, I’m a bit sick of them.

Anyway, we can ultimately use whatever we want… afterall we’re free to
do so. It ultimately comes down to preference.

That being said, IF we only had gear logos to choose from, then I would
probably not mind yours because the gears do look quite different from
anything else out there (that’s a compliment ;-)On Thu, 2002-08-01 at 14:40, Romi Kuntsman wrote:

A few suggestions:

  1. Where the layer is not cut out, don’t show what’s under it. SDL hides the
complex stuff from the developer (unless he wants to mess with SDL’s code),
and that would illustrate that better. And it would remove any blending from
the logo, which would allow us to simplify it, even for just two color (for
    black and white printers).
  2. How about electronics instead of gears?
  3. The writing can and perhaps should be made a bit simpler…> ----- Original Message -----
