SDL News (January 18, 2002)

The SDL Game Contest winners have been selected!
First place was awarded to LBreakout by Michael Speck. Second place
went to Tower Toppler by Andreas Roever. Third place was Vectoroids
by Bill Kendrick, just edging out Rock Dodgers by Paul Holt.

I want to personally thank everybody who participated in the contest.
We judges had a great time playing the games, and we enjoyed them all!
Choosing the games to win was tough, and we each had our favorites that
didn’t place.

There are also lots of new goodies on the SDL website:

  • R-aTTaCk, an addictive Tetris-attack-like game, has been added to
    the games page.
  • Bomb ? Bomb, a bomberman-like game, with the ability to make addons,
    has been added to the games page.
  • Crossfire, a graphical role-playing adventure game similar to nethack,
    has been added to the games page.
  • Anvil of Thyrion, an Open Source port of the Hexen 2 engine to Linux,
    has been added to the games page.
  • Coriander, an IEEE1394 IIDC Digital Camera controller, has been added
    to the applications page.
  • Project: Starfighter, a 3D shoot-em-up in early development, has been
    added to the games page.
  • Relnev’s Quake2, an SDL port and minor fixes for Quake 2, has been added
    to the games page.
  • Aliens vs. Predator Linux, an unofficial port of Rebellion’s Aliens vs.
    Predator Gold, has been added to the games page.
  • Wolfenstein 3D Linux, an unofficial Linux port of id Software’s
    Wolfenstein 3D, has been added to the games page.
  • The company AppWares Development Group is using SDL for their products -
    the Integrated Media Portal. Their first public download using SDL is
    available at: http://sabres.integratedmediaportal.com/

  • SDL_gfxPrimitives has been expanded and renamed to SDL_gfx on the
    libraries page.

  • Chain Reaction, an addictive, multi-player ‘board’ game for 2-6 players,
    has been added to the games page.
  • Xiqual, a library of miscellaneous functions for 2D games, has been added
    to the libraries page.
  • JAD Menu, a simple OpenGL-based dialog and menu system, has been added to
    the libraries page.
  • FreeJ, a unified framework for realtime video processing, has been added
    to the applications page.
