Hi there…
Ok, I’ve hacked up a copy of Parallax’s Descent running under the SDL.
You can throw the DOOM away now… It runs and you can shoot things.
No sound, network yet, but it’s a start…
Source should be on a website somewhere in a week or so while I walk the
(DOS-based) maintainer of the Descent source base (D1X) through the
necessary changes. I’ll post more info later…
Thanks for the cool API…
Peter

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!! Woo hoo! I’ve been waiting for this!
If this hadn’t happened by the time I finish my first two projects with
SDL, I was gonna do it. But I’m sure you’ve done a better job than I
would have.
This should help the whole Descent/Linux project, though. As I recall,
the latest version of Ldescent has extensive problems with sound and
some graphics. This could really get them past that hump.

ANYTHING that can help that spaghetti-pile is good for us. Now if I
can just get IPX and my joystick working so I can play my room mate at
D1 again… :)On 23 Aug, Peter Hawkins wrote:

So, can we see it yet?
Nearly… The D1X maintainer is getting there, but we have a few
incompatibilities with the DOS version to work over before I actually get it
released. Alternatively I could post an interim version somewhere if anyone
has any space for free…

I’m willing to wait for the official version.
BTW, I’m tuning the SDL audio quite a bit, so when the official Descent
version is released, it should be quite easy to add sound.
