SDL_SetVideoMode

I have a good idea for SDL authors. I don’t like much creating always black
surface while using SDL_SetVideoMode(). I usually use windowed style of
applications and it doesn’t look good when your window always flickers to
black while resizing. There should be possibility to create surface from
existing pixel data for example after SDL_VideoResize event…

Just a good tip

Subject: [SDL] fancy text with SDL_ttf?

Hi

I’m looking for tips on how to create fancy text using SDL_ttf. What I’m
after is text like Macromedia “Fireworks” can generate. Such effects as:

  • Alpha blended drop shadow
  • Alpha blended “glow” around text
  • Textured text characters
  • Variable size/colour outline around each character

oh…and with all the above nicely anti-aliased too

Can I use SDL_ttf for this or should I be looking elsewhere…?

Any tips/help/comments appreciated

Thanks, Paul.

hi everyone!
i have a little question, here it goes:

if i use a weird weight or hieght like SDL_SetVideoMode(600, 600, 16, 0). it does make my game more slowly?,.
i try it, and i notice that sdl creates some black bands across the screen.

thanks to all.

The 600x600 part should not make it run more slowly. The request for 16
bits per pixel could slow it down if your hardware doesn’t support them.
The 0 flags might slow it down since you are asking for a single
buffered software surface. Which can be pretty slow.

That is odd because the code you listed is asking for a window. You
would expect to see black bands on each side of a 600x600 active area if
it were full screen.

thanks to all.

For mobile systems, only one full screen window. Also, you seem to be
using an older version of SDL (1.3 perhaps?), and you should consider updating.
