SDL_TTF UNICODE only 16 bits?

I was just reworking some of my old SDL code for a class I’m teaching
and noticed that the UNICODE versions of the SDL_TTF expect 16 bit
characters even though wchar_t is 32 bits. This makes it impossible, or
at least a little difficult, to use long character and string constant
with SDL_TTF. Any chance for a change in the near future?
