Better yet, I’ve now got a debugging environment set up. The crash happens
in the TTF text drawing routines, and appears to be a bug in libsdl-ttf1.2
(or, at least, I’ve got its example program crashing on a couple of fonts).
Moreover, if I disable the text drawing, tuxpaint no longer crashes.

I’ll take a look at sdl-ttf1.2 and let you know what I find.
