Tcpa

have you guys heard of tcpa? If not you might want to look into it. TCPA
is something microsoft is proposing which would make it so only programs
that were signed with special encrypted keys could be run on a computer.
They are also trying to make it so that it’s illegal to sell any computer
that is not tcpa compliant. They claim this will stop piracy, hacking,
viruses and even email spam. WTF email spam?? How does encrypted exe’s
fix that at all?

it sounds like just some crazy MS idea doesnt it? Kidna like the idea back
of having each CPU have a unique ID number they could use to track people?
Well guess what…today microsoft released the source code to help other
OS’s become compliant as mandated by the courts. They are proposing 5 years
in prison for selling non tcpa compliant computers…so in 5 years if you
sell your current computer you can go to jail for 5 years…wtf??

also, this fucks with ameteur/small business coders like many of us out
there. Specificly it messes with low level coders. I have been working
on a game now for almost a year which is a generic 3d multiplayer engine.
My plan was to make a scripting language that translated into native machine
code bytecodes for efficiency and dynamicism, but my dream is now dead,
since most likely machine code will be encrypted in ram. Buffer overflows
will still exist causing unexpected results. Email spam will still exist.
Maybe someone will crack this algorithm. We can only hope.

This will also mess with the open sourced community since only exe’s signed
with this encrypted key will be able to run…you wont readily be able
to recompile your kernal or any other program you have.

this makes me wonder if hacking could be protected by the right to bear
arms. Grr…this makes me so pissed off, i hope they dont get away with
this. Compilers could become a thing of the past.

Forget about it.
There is always the consumer. And if the consumer decides not to buy
such crap, the companies will fast give microsoft and stupid politicans
a big kick in their asses.
Look - sony recently build their first mp3-cd-player, because the
consumers demand such things. Not their stupid minidisc players with all
sort of copyproctions and their “magic-gate” memory stick. There will
always be free computer systems - like linux.
Seems that microsoft will dig their own hole. Let’s have a look beyound:
in 5 years microsoft makes such fcking bigbrother-spyware operating
systems, that even the housewife from the next door knows that microsoft
is reading their email. So they will use software like linux, that
guarantees “free speech” !!

And another thing: laws, that nazi-america is trying to press through
will not count a penny in other states. And - do you think america will
declare “war against terror” on me , if i use a pc and an operating
system without this encryptions stuff ? grins

Very cool stuff indeed.
“my dream is now dead” - WTF? Keep your pride and fiight! As soon as the EUCD
is implemented here in Germany, that’s what I’m gonna do.

Can we make use of the implications of Godwin’s law (?) really quickly
before this obviously off-topic thread grows any larger?

This is an important issue, but not for this mailing list.

Obviously. Will you suggest a better place? Is there a mailinglist or a
newsgroup?

Ah, you got me there

A point to start may be the EFF newsgroup comp.org.eff.talk. Check out
http://www.eff.org/EFFdocs/online_eff.html, too.

http://www.stoppoliceware.org/ is another website of activists, there might
be a similar forum there.

While I agree with you completely, this may not be the right place to
discuss the problem.

If you are a US citizen what you MUST do is contact your representative
and senators and tell them exactly what you said here. This is
especially true if your representative/senator is a republican or you
live in state controlled by Disney or any other large media company.
(The people pushing this in congress were paid off by MS and the big
media companies.) It is very important that as the mid term elections
near you contact your representative and find out where they stand on
this. If they are in favor of it you MUST vote against them and let both
candidates know that you did. (A vote isn’t much it is what we have.)

If you are not a US citizen you MUST contact your government and
complain the the US is once again trying to unilaterally control trade
in computers and software and that this action is designed to destroy
the software industry in your country. With luck your government will
complain to the US government and make them think twice about this.

Above all, remember this, keep vigilant, if they know we are watching
and acting the usually do the right thing. Whatever you do DO NOT take
any illegal action against the perpetrators of this bill.
