Thanks for your help guys, The compiler errors are gone, which is great, ecept
all that appears on the screen is black and white mouse pointer in the top
left corner. The image was drawn in paint, and is a simple 16 by 16 picture of
some bricks.

Yay, worked it out:
my first problem was that the name of the image was not “tile.bmp”, it
was “brick.bmp” (which I found VERY annoying).

The second was in my SDL_BlitSurface, where I has accidentally put ‘tile’ and
’screen’ in the wrong places:

originally, I wrote SDL_BlitSurface(screen, NULL, tile, &dest);

the ‘correct answer’ was SDL_BlitSurface(tile, NULL, screen, &dest);
