I don’t understand the purpose of the SDL_updateRect,
and SDL_updateRects functions. When I write directly
to the surface, it shows up on the screen already.=====

Not always. You can’t be sure about that.–

Each time you blit a surface, you need then. If you work directly with the
surface datas,
it is possible you will not need those functions.
