This is a bit off-topic, but for whatever it’s worth…

When you interview grads in the future, look for those that understand that
computer science is applied mathematics. Some universities understand this
and teach CS as math, sadly most don’t. One of my former professors put it
succinctly: “We don’t offer a degree in computer science, it’s a degree in
math with an emphasis on computer science.”

Those who don’t understand this should perhaps try reading some of Knuth’s
books. They’re almost pure math.

cough … understatement. I’ve met maybe 3 US-taught uni grads that
were worth anything when giving them interviews :). (Yes, I’m in the
US btw). When they dunno who Knuth or Huffman are, ya start to
wonder. As such, seeing ‘uni grad’ on a resume or in a discussion
means little more to me than the determination to stick it out and
complete the degree.

I agree somewhat with you. Computer science course should be about how
computers and
languages work, without focusing in any special language or tool. And
mathematics also helps
here.

I did have lots of mathematics when I took my degree.

At least in Portugal we are still quite fortunate on what our universities
offer to computer science
students.–

That statement makes me very angry, no one should be to poor to have
access to an education.

That statement makes me very angry. No one should be poor enough to
feel that they need institutionalized education.

Donny, were you home schooled? That would explain a lot…

Seriously, If a teacher is worth listening too. Then that teacher is
worth paying. On the other hand, if the teacher is not worth paying,
why would you listen to them?

I completely agree. ?However, the fact remains that I’m at a point where I
cannot afford it on my own, and I’m being denied assistance. ?So the best I can
do is make use of the Internet.

How long have you been on the list?

Over two years, but I am known to overlook posts from time to time. ?Not to
mention, I just use the web viewer for the newsgroup, so when someone posts on
an older thread it is easy to slip by.

I have a mailing list at gameprogrammer.com that is intended for
learning programming and especially game programming. It is not the
most active list, but it is open for discussion of all these issues.
There are about 600 dedicated members and a lot of folks on the list
have developed commercial quality games.

I’m about to redo the site and I would appreciate input on the kind of
site features people would like to see.

Home-schooling is the only type of schooling I find even more
distasteful than institutionalized education.

I don’t think monetary compensation for a teacher means
institutionalized education. On Thu, Jul 30, 2009 at 10:05 AM, Bob Pendleton wrote:

Ok, we agree on home schooling. I’ve actually had the “joy” of having
previously home schooled people in a class at at college level. Not
fun, not fun at all.

This could lead to a very interesting discussion. But, very of topic.
Want to take it off line?

What do you consider to be institutional education? Why do you hate it
so much? And, what cultural background are you coming from that leads
you to those strong feelings?
